International Award

We are delighted to announce that we have achieved The International School Award from the British Council.
This award is in recognition of our work with the children to promote international understanding.
There are various strands to the way we demonstrate our commitment to promoting an appreciation of cultural diversity.
We have a co-ordinator for International development.
Every year we hold a World Awareness Week to encourage children to gain a greater understanding of different cultures- 'to walk in someone else's shoes and view the world through different eyes.
We have built up contacts with schools in other countries and have a well- established link with Central Primary School in Kisumu, Kenya.
We welcome visitors from other countries.
We have set up an international section on our school website www.abbeymead.ik.org
We have promoted Teachers International Professional Development and over the year one of our teachers has visited
the NATO & SHAPE headquarters in Brussels, two teachers (one from Keystage 1 and one from Keystage 2 visited the Czech Republic to look at Special Educational Needs and Inclusion, in May one assistant head teacher visited Perth, Australia to look at school leadership issues and in September 2002 the Head teacher is visiting America on a Churchill Fellowship Grant.
The award was presented at a ceremony at the British Council in London on October 2nd.
