International Dimensions

Abbeymead School achieved the International School Award from the British Council in September 2002.

At Abbeymead School we place a strong emphasis on the international dimensions of the curriculum.

'To reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person'.. and for these ends to practice tolerance and live together with one another as good neighbours' - Preamble of the United Nations Charter.

At Abbeymead we aim to promote children's understanding of the diversity of the wider world by:
·direct teaching of personal, social, moral and citizenship issues (P.S.M.E. policy and Scheme of Work)
·including International dimensions and links through curriculum areas (Equal Opportunities Policy)
·teaching core values through 'Living Values', (whole school approach)
·participating in World Awareness Week annually
·promoting international links through the school web site

In this way we aim to:
·encourage an active interest of global issues
·raise awareness of how the world is changing culturally, economically and technologically
·helping children to understand issues of human rights
·promote a sense of social justice and a commitment to racial and gender equality
·broaden children's perspectives, promote curiosity and tolerance.

We also aim to
·develop professional development opportunities in other countries for staff
·welcome visitors from other countries
