Maths

In line with the requirements of the National Numeracy Strategy, Abbeymead school provides your child with a structured daily maths lesson of between 45 minutes to one hour. The whole class is taught together for a good proportion of that time, with oral and mental work featuring strongly in each lesson.
We aim to give our children confidence and competence with numbers, measures and data-handling, with the inclination and ability to solve number problems in a variety of contexts.
In the early years and beyond, your child will learn through practical activities, oral work, mental calculation and the use of resources such as number lines, charts, equipment, etc. and informal jottings. Number patterns still have great importance, as does the instant recognition of number bonds and multiplication tables. Later on, the expanded then standard written methods are introduced as pupils progress to working with larger numbers and more complex problems. Their mental calculations also become more sophisticated, and the ability to use a calculator selectively and efficiently is a higher-order skill in itself.
In Key Stage Two maths is taught in ability groups mixed across a year group to target pace and content most effectively.
Our aim is that children find maths a source of wonder and fun, offering intellectual motivation and excitement!
