Personal, Social and Moral Education (PSME)

PSME (Personal, Social, Moral Education) is an important part of life at Abbeymead, and dovetails well into the national recommendations for a planned programme of Citizenship Education (see also Health Education and Citizenship.)
Every class has a weekly 'Circle Time' which provides the opportunity to explore issues that affect children's lives. Our aims are for our children to:
· Develop good relationships and respect differences between people
· Develop self-confidence to make the most of their abilities
· Prepare to play an active role in society.
There are planned themes which include friendship, co-operation, resolving conflicts, assertiveness, change as a natural part of life, exploration of feelings, gender issues and racial harmony. In addition to circle time we stimulate understanding through collective worship, debate and discussion, role play and drama, encouraging every child to participate fully.
These strategies develop the skills of effective communication, co-operative working and mental flexibility.
